CSUMB Campus Navigation App
Overview
For this project, the assignment was to create an app that would benefit the CSUMB community. My group and I decided to create a navigation app specifically for the school.
Design Process
Ideation
These are the initial sketches from our first brainstorming session. At first, my team and I wanted to make a parking app but we soon pivoted to a broader focus. I took note of the goals we wanted to accomplish with the app, the basic interface we would need to design, the target audience, and more.
During the ideation phase, I suggested that we include a social aspect to the app to encourage our audience to use it, rather than competing navigation apps. This social aspect would include information about current events on campus, the ability to let others know if you were attending, and, of course, directions to the event.
Research
We conducted extensive research over the course of the project. We began with field studies to determine the needs of CSUMB students. Once we had our focus, we did competitive analysis of other navigation apps, and created personas and journey maps of potential users.
Prototypes
Once we had collected enough research, we began prototyping and building the app. We conducted user testing to be sure that our design was functional and easy to use.
Final Product
We remained consistent in our design from the original prototype. We created the rest of the necessary pages and fine-tuned our design. I hope to continue work on this app in the future as I believe it will have a major benefit among students, staff, and visitors to CSUMB.
